Apple's smallest tablet now has its biggest screen yet. The company announced the eighth-generation iPad Mini earlier this week alongside several new MacBook Pro models, introducing OLED technology to the Mini for the first time. The tablet reaches stores on November 6, but preorders are already open at Amazon, Walmart, Apple and other retailers, with prices starting at $699.

The new Mini carries an 8.5-inch OLED display, the largest in the lineup's history. Even so, the device is both thinner and lighter than its 2024 predecessor. It is powered by Apple's new A20 Pro chip, which is expected to deliver faster performance and support some of the company's new Siri AI features, including the option to customize Siri's voice.

Apple has also added what it calls an "Acoustic Display," which pairs the speakers with the screen and frame to produce louder, richer sound, with deeper bass and clearer highs. Other changes include IP67 water resistance and a 12-megapixel front camera, which now sits on the long edge of the device to make landscape video calls easier.

On the connectivity side, the tablet uses Apple's N1 wireless networking chip, bringing support for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. Cellular models also get Apple's new C2 modem, which the company says offers up to 50 percent faster cellular speeds than the previous generation.

For the Wi-Fi model with 128GB of storage, preorders start at $699 at Amazon, Walmart, Target, B&H Photo and Apple. It comes in black or a creamy white shade. Best Buy is also taking preorders and includes a $50 e-gift card with each purchase. Moving up to 256GB adds $100 at those retailers, while the 512GB version costs $999. The 512GB model also uses a six-core CPU, compared with the five-core CPU in the lower-storage versions.

Buyers who want cellular service can preorder the 128GB model from $849 at Amazon, B&H Photo and Apple. The 256GB and 512GB cellular versions cost $949 and $1,149, respectively.

Apple also offers a glare-reducing nano-texture display option on the 256GB and 512GB models, starting at $899 and $1,099, respectively. Choosing an LTE configuration raises those prices to $1,049 and $1,249.

The Verge has not yet tested the new iPad Mini, but plans to share its impressions after getting hands-on time with the tablet at Apple's "Pro and Tell" event.
