Amazon has dropped its usual big autumn hardware showcase this year in favor of a series of smaller product announcements spread across October. This week, the company invited journalists to a small event in New York City's financial district to present its latest Echo devices.

Earlier in the month, Amazon announced new Fire TV devices, new Kindles, the Alexa Tablet Pro 12, Ring's first smart lock, new hardware from AI-wearable startup Bee, and new Blink 4K cameras.

Panos Panay, Amazon's senior vice president of devices, Alexa, and Leo, opened the event by explaining the thinking behind the staggered approach. "We have so many products we're launching that are meaningful," he said. "However, we get to this point when we do everything at once; not all your children get enough attention." A longer rollout, he said, lets the company focus more closely on each launch.

Panay also teased two launches still to come, one from Ring and some "Echo on the Go" news. He described the Echo announcements as centered on "the most important focus we have, which is the home."

He spent about 45 minutes introducing five new Echo smart speakers and displays: the Echo Show 16, Echo Time, Alexa Photo Frame, Echo Studio with Home Camera, and a new Echo Dot. Each product was displayed on a plinth in the warehouse-like venue.

Panay demonstrated several software features for Echo Show smart displays. They will debut on the Show 16 and later reach existing Show products. They include dedicated home screens, an interactive 3D map view for controlling smart home devices, and a meal planning feature.

He also said the company has "opened up Alexa Plus' brain a little bit more," adding a new layer of understanding to its generative-AI-powered assistant. Panay noted that AI in the home is still relatively new, and that while it is common on computers and phones, the home has been harder to unlock.

Amazon aims to address that with what it calls Alexa's "new brain," an updated Alexa Plus that can perform "deeper research" in addition to familiar tasks such as controlling lights, setting timers, and playing music.

To handle these longer conversations, Show devices get a new "Card" interface that collects each chat. Cards also appear in the Alexa app and on Alexa.com, so users can pick up a conversation with the assistant from wherever they are.

The event then moved into a set of small rooms styled to resemble home spaces, where product engineers and designers demonstrated the new devices and walked through their features.
