Christian Mbilli faces the biggest night of his career on Saturday, when he defends his WBC super middleweight title against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. Mbilli remains undefeated as a professional, but oddsmakers favor Alvarez, who is widely regarded as a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

Mbilli reached this position thanks to the outcome of Alvarez's previous bout, a September 2025 loss to Terence Crawford. Crawford retired after that career-best win, and Mbilli was promoted from interim champion to full titleholder.

He had captured the interim belt two fights earlier, stopping Maciej Sulecki in the first round in June 2025. In his last outing before the promotion, he fought to a hard split draw with Lester Martinez.

Mbilli is a muscular, high-pressure bruiser who uses his strength to bully opponents. Twenty-four of his 29 career wins have come by knockout. He likes to drive opponents toward the ropes, then land heavy right hands to the head while working the body with left hands. He once finished Mark Heffron with a body shot in just 40 seconds. He is also willing to rough things up inside, leaving few comfortable moments for the man across from him.

The same style carries drawbacks, and both showed in the draw with Martinez, a fight in which Mbilli had built a strong early lead. Over his last five fights he has thrown 78 punches per round, 58 of them power shots, double the super middleweight average. That volume, combined with the muscle he carries, can wear him down in longer fights, as it did over 10 rounds against Martinez.

His pursuit of big shots also exposes him to counters, and the openings grow as he tires. Sergiy Derevyanchenko, fighting effectively with one arm after an early injury, still found some big counters in the middle and late rounds against Mbilli.

Mbilli enters as a +250 underdog, a closer line than the matchup would have drawn a year or two ago. Alvarez has gone eight fights without a stoppage, a possible warning sign for an aging fighter whose power was once central to his success. Even so, the source notes he still has enough pop to hurt anyone he lands cleanly on.

The route to victory for Mbilli is fairly clear. He is the bigger man and thrives as the aggressor, while Alvarez is not a high-volume offensive fighter. Mbilli can try to drag the fight into an uncomfortable brawl, push the pace and outwork his more technically gifted opponent.

Crawford shared a similar view with DAZN: "Styles make fights, and Mbilli's style is tailor-made for Canelo." He added that he does not see Mbilli winning a boxing match, but believes his best chance lies in "letting his hands go, roughing Canelo up, and making it a dogfight."
