Manchester United’s top scorer has four goals this season. Eight other players in the Premier League have more. That gap was on full display after United fell 3-0 to Bournemouth on Sunday, a result that pushed the club into its worst start to a league season in 40 years.

The loss did more than damage the standings. It changed the dynamic in the stands. Historically, United supporters have been loyal through managerial changes and poor results. That patience ran out on Sunday. Fans cheered Michael Carrick off the field, then booed the playing squad as they walked back to the dressing room.

The booing signaled a shift in attitude. The anger is not just directed at the players on the pitch. It extends to the ownership group, senior management, and the recruitment staff who selected the current roster.

The scoring drought is the most visible symptom of the problem. Since Cristiano Ronaldo left in November 2022, the club has struggled to find a reliable striker. Rasmus Hojlund was signed to fill that role but was sent back to Italy after a lack of production. The summer arrival of Benjamin Sesko, a 23-year-old from Serbia, has been marred by injury, leaving a hole in the lineup.

Coaches have tried to fill the gap with other options. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have played in the striker role, though they are naturally wingers. Bruno Fernandes, who won the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year award for breaking the assists record, has been asked to play a false nine role. That position requires him to face the goal, a style that limits his ability to distribute the ball to teammates.

Mbeumo leads the team with four goals. In the wider league, eight players have scored more than that. Those eight players would all find starting positions in the current United squad based on their output.

The frustration has spilled over from the field to the boardroom. The Glazer family has owned the club since 2005. Their 75 signings over the last 13 years have been widely criticized. CEO Omar Berrada and technical director Jason Wilcox now face the brunt of the anger. Defender Lisandro Martinez criticized Wilcox specifically after a loss to Atletico Madrid, pointing to a lack of summer investment.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS Group invested two years ago, promising a rebuild of the training ground and Old Trafford. So far, the return on that investment has been minimal. Ratcliffe and INEOS are viewed by many fans with the same suspicion as the Glazers.

The relationship between manager Carrick and star player Fernandes is also strained. Fernandes publicly criticized Carrick’s tactics after a defeat in Como. Although Fernandes did not play in the Bournemouth match, the fans booed him off the field in solidarity with the rest of the squad. At 32, Fernandes is approaching the end of his career, but he remains the team’s primary creator. When he performs well, United wins. When he does not, the team struggles to compete.

The next step is clear. The club needs to define a playing style that reconnects with its identity. Whether that means pressing high or sitting deep, the current group lacks a unified approach. The fans are demanding change, and the next few weeks will determine if the management and players can meet that demand.
