The Tampa Bay Rays stayed alive in the World Series with a 12-inning thriller against the Milwaukee Brewers. Milwaukee was only a half inning from finishing a sweep and claiming its first championship. Instead, Ben Williamson singled in the 12th to break a 3-3 tie and send the series to a fifth game.

The Rays still face a steep climb if they hope to win their first Commissioner's Trophy. Both clubs now have a quick turnaround and possibly thin bullpens after the long game. Game 5 is set for 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday night.

In the NFL, the Indianapolis Colts have begun selling off veterans. Six-time All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson went to the Seattle Seahawks for a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick, giving Seattle a cheap boost along its offensive line. Indianapolis then sent two-time All-Pro defensive tackle DeForest Buckner back to the San Francisco 49ers, the team that drafted him, for a 2027 fourth-round pick. That return beats the fifth-round compensatory pick the Colts projected to receive had Buckner left in free agency. Attention now turns to whether running back Jonathan Taylor will be next.

The NBA saw two significant injuries. Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards, who scored 47 points less than 24 hours earlier, will miss up to two months because of a right knee problem that needs arthroscopic surgery. He has dealt with the issue since last season and chose to have the procedure now so he can be more available later in the year. Utah Jazz forward Jaren Jackson Jr. will be out at least six weeks with a torn MCL that does not require surgery, a blow to the team's rim protection and its postseason hopes.

In college football, the playoff selection committee faces a crowded SEC picture. CBS Sports projects three to five SEC teams in the field. Georgia is the conference's best team despite an upset loss and a bye week. Behind the Bulldogs, Kentucky, LSU, Texas, Alabama and Ole Miss form a logjam of contenders. The Big Ten, by contrast, has seen most of its top teams fall short of preseason expectations.

College basketball is nearly here, with Notre Dame and Villanova opening the season Sunday. Senior writer Matt Norlander ranked the top 101 teams, with Florida as the strongest title challenger. He called the Gators "unquestionably one of the strongest preseason No. 1s of the past 15 years." This is also the first season of the 76-team NCAA Tournament era, so more programs than ever will be part of the at-large and bubble conversation.

Pete Prisco's Week 8 NFL Power Rankings put the Minnesota Vikings first. They are the league's only unbeaten team at 6-0 and have the NFL's top scoring defense. Prisco remains unconvinced, however, noting that the offense ranks 23rd in scoring and the passing game is 29th in yards per game. He said quarterback Kyler Murray "has to be better" with a tough four-game stretch ahead. The Bears and Buccaneers made the biggest jumps, while the Texans fell six spots.

Elsewhere, the Miami Heat opened 0-4. Jaylen Brown's representatives denied that he asked the Celtics for a trade. Kawhi Leonard will miss his return to Los Angeles with a knee injury. Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor will have season-ending toe surgery. Alabama dismissed defensive back Dre Kirkpatrick Jr. after a second arrest.
